It wasn’t until late 90’s to early 2000’s when the C40 was sold with a carbon fork (Star or Force models). With it’s classic lines, racing pedigree and history, it’s easy to see why any serious cycling enthusiast (myself included) would like to own a C40.įor many years, the C40 was also sold with a steel Precisa fork of which there are 2 versions. Sir Bradley Wiggins was also quoted as saying the C40 is probably his most favorite bike to look at (having not ridden it yet – he bought a frame on eBay for his collection). In an interview with Ernesto Colnago, the C40 was listed as one of his most favorite bikes. In 1997, the C40 frame apparently cost GBP 1650.00. It’s now 27 years since the release of the C40 and carbon fibre is still the material of choice for high performance bike frames. The Colnago C40 proved to the cycling industry and consumers that carbon frames were not only light and stiff, but extremely durable. Over the 10 years, the frame was revised on 3 occasions – so there are 4 different versions of the C40 frame. It was in production for approximately 10 years (1994 – 2004) and eventually superseded by the Colnago C50. The C40 name originates from ‘C’ for Carbon and ’40’ in recognition of Colnago’s 40th anniversary (1954 to 1994).
However, I decided to only include C40 frames in this article that were listed in the Colnago catalogs and were therefore widely available to the general public. When researching the C40 on the internet, there is mention of an earlier carbon lugged frame with round carbon tubes rather than the Master profile tubes usually found on the C40. For example, this includes bikes with major dents, carbon fiber damage, excessive drivetrain wear, and/or moderate to significant suspension component wear.The Colnago C40 was NOT the first carbon frame designed by Colnago, but following it’s release in 1994, the C40 was ridden to victory in some of cycling’s biggest races. We do not sell bikes that we rate lower than 6 on the condition scale. If the bike has suspension, those components will have scratches and scuffs. Handlebars, stem, derailleurs, and levers show moderate scuffing or scratches, and the saddle might have slight tears. The drivetrain has moderate to heavy wear. Carbon frames may have been previously damaged, but have been professionally repaired and are structurally sound. Aluminum, steel, and titanium frames may have minor dents.
While the frame and wheels will have cosmetic scuffs, scratches, and/or paint loss, they will not be structurally damaged. 7/10 Rating: Goodīikes in this range are well-loved and have moderate wear. Cockpit, saddle, and suspension lowers (where applicable) will also have cosmetic scuffs and scratches. The drivetrain will have wear from normal usage and there will be slight scratches and scuffs on derailleurs, shifters, and levers. Wheels will also have minor cosmetic damage on rims, spokes, and/or hubs. The frame will have slight paint loss, scratches, and/or scuffs. To earn a rating in this range, bicycles have sustained some wear but no significant damage.
Bikes with suspension components have minor scuffs and scratches on the fork legs and shock, and the stanchions are immaculate. The cockpit has light wear, primarily on the grips or handlebar tape. The drivetrain shows light wear but the derailleurs, shifters, and levers have not sustained any damage. Frame and wheels show slight signs of wear with only minor scuffs and scratches - no paint chipping. While these bikes have been ridden, they remain in excellent condition. Drivetrain, levers, cockpit, and suspension (where applicable) are in new condition. The frame and wheels might have minor blemishes or scuffs from transportation or showroom display. Original stickers, parts, and accessories are included.
These bicycles are good as new, often built right out of the box from the manufacturer. Condition Rating Guide 10/10 Rating: Like-New
